Hank celebrated his 5th birthday this weekend. We kicked off the weekend with a trip to the movies to see "Paddington 2" with the family and Maga. Afterward, Paga also joined us for a dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings where the adults could watch the Warriors game while the kids could bury themselves in the tablets they provide at the restaurant!
Instead of doing a big party, Hank opted to follow Lyla's lead and also take two of his friends from church, Liam and Ames, out for a Boys' Day with lunch at McDonald's, a trip to Build-A-Bear, and treats afterward while Hank opened his presents. Dustin got to take the boys out for their adventure, and he may have enjoyed it as much as the little guys!
On Sunday, Hank had a birthday dinner, opened presents from the family, then dug into his Minecraft Creeper cake. Hank was SO HAPPY with all his gifts, and he declared his birthday even better than Christmas. This year he got Power Ranger and Guardians of the Galaxy action figures, an astronaut apron, a drone, a Minecraft sword/pick axe, lacrosse sticks, a baseball helmet and mitt, firetruck Legos, a HexBug, coloring book and pencils, Matchbox cars and some cash to spend post-birthday.
I think there were aspects of an extended birthday celebration that were good for Hank and also some things that he didn't love so much (i.e. not celebrating as fully on his actual birthday as we would if all festivities were all in one day). We shall see how he chooses to celebrate till next year.
