Mom went in for her annual skin check a few months early because she had a mole she was a little concerned about. After a little debate, the dermatologist decided they should be safe and take a skin biopsy of the spot Mom was concerned about. It turned out to be melanoma in situ. Because it was caught so incredibly early, the cancer hadn't spread and was all contained to right around the mole. She went in a few weeks later to have a procedure done where the doctor takes 5mm margins on each side of the spot, and then sends that chunk he takes out to the lab to make sure they got all the cancer out. It was quite the hassled recovery process since the incision ran down her right quadricep muscle, but all is well and has since been assured all the cancer if officially out! Genetic testing had to be done as well since she's still only 35 and having this melanoma. The genetic testing found two variants but nothing they could link to being higher risk for developing cancer, so we're going to hope it was all a fluke. This is a good reminder that preventative care is the way to go!
