Last weekend we took a family trip down to Santa Barbara so that Dad, Uncle Bret, Uncle B, and Aunt Liz and Brother Alonso could all run in the Santa Barbara Marathon. Lots of training, time, and running had been put in, so the kids and I were excited to cheer everyone on. The marathon didn't turn out as expected, as Dad made it to mile 16 and felt terrible! He stumbled around until mile 18, where two guys caught him before he collapsed. A bunch of firefighters and EMT personnel later, it was determined we needed to take an ambulance to the hospital to make sure everything was okay. Dad was treated for pretty bad dehydration and heat exhaustion. We were just glad it wasn't anything worse! Everyone else finished, but it was a brutal course with lots of sunshine and heat, causing everyone else to have much slower times than anticipated. That was a bit of a downer. The upside? Getting to see Cousin Sean Friday night, Martina and Dave on Sunday, and getting to spend quality time with our extended family and the Alonsos. Dad is determined now to finish another marathon to prove he can do it, so I guess it's back home for more training...
