This 4th of July was a great one! We had been talking all week about how we'd celebrate the holiday, but we were coming up short. In the morning, we went to our ward's breakfast. Beforehand there was a 5K that Dustin ran with the kids in the jogging stroller cheering him on. We had a good time catching up with friends and meeting new faces.
Afterward, we took a bit of a spontaneous trip up to Fairfield to go on the delta with our friends, the Jergensens. We hadn't ever taken the kids on a boat before, so I wasn't sure how things were going to go. Hank took a while to understand the concept that he had to sit down. After injuring himself, though, he found himself a bit more compliant. Lyla at one point volunteered to keep her hand on the back of Hank's life jacket to make sure he stayed safe. Such a good big sister! She preferred to stay up at the front of the boat, soaking up some sun and enjoying the water splashing her. There was a brief tubing outing with Lyla and Hank, followed by lots of wake boarding, kneeboarding, and water skiing by the men. Dustin took his first trips ever on a wakeboard and he did great! I think he picked it up pretty fast, and he even got in a jump or two! We took a few dips in the delta as well, which was fun for all the kids. Again, another day of Hank and Lyla running on little sleep.
We headed back home at dinner time, thinking Hank and Lyla would nap on the way home, leaving Lyla refreshed and ready to go see some fireworks at the fairgrounds (our only original plan). When Lyla finally did wake up, she said she was not up for going out and decided to stay home and watch a movie in her pajamas instead. We were impressed that she was mature enough to know that she was too tired to stay up super late and go out, so we were more than happy to oblige the movie on the couch request. We snuck in a few of our own small fireworks before the movie, but I don't think Lyla was a big fan. We ended the 4th tired, plenty tan, and with great memories of the day.
