Lyla got her first taste of the Best Coast on a 5 day Thanksgiving excursion. It was an experience of many firsts for the little one including her first train ride and first plane ride. Ellen spent several days preparing, making sure that Lyla would be fully equipped for the journey. With a mother like Ellen, Lyla will never be left wanting. Though there was a fair amount of anxiety going in, Lyla weathered the travels well. She enjoyed the plane ride, and made a lot of friends. When turbulence picked up and I got sick to my stomach, she was happy as a clam. There were a few fussy moments, but thankfully the worst blow up occurred in the airport, so people had the option to move away from us.
When we arrived in Cali, Lyla got her first taste of a new phenomenon - Cousins. Lyla's cousins were very excited to meet her with everyone getting a chance to hold her some time over the weekend. Liz and Aubrey were very sweet as they forced all of the kids to use hand sanitizer before handling baby girl. Their foresight showed Solomonic wisdom as Lyla managed to emerge from an entire weekend of being passed around healthy as the day she left CT. A small miracle, and one for which Ellen was grateful.
Thanksgiving Dinner was fantastic, and witnessed perhaps the largest gathering of Tillmans under a single roof that I have ever been a part of. Three turkeys were prepared and consumed for the occasion.
On Friday, we drove the Challenger out to meet up with the Fresno Keoughs. Lyla got to meet more cousins, and Ellen and I had a good time catching up with Aaron, Kristen and the fam. Lyla loved riding in the Challenger. The combination of the throaty exhaust and the torque were like a sedative. She had her eyes open for a grand total of about 3 minutes for the entire 6 hours of driving. Max wasn't so sure about the Challenger. He was really excited to ride in it, but later confessed "it was kind of scary."
While we were in California, Lyla found her voice. The week before we left for Cali, at her 2 month check-up, the doctor asked if she was cooing. At the time the answer was "grunting? absolutely. Cooing, not so much." In California however, the coo was in full effect. Several times I came in the room to see Lyla and Maga fully engaged in conversation.
Lyla was also able to take her first Tillman family picture. She was a total doll for the photo shoot, and the photographer was so taken, she decided to shoot a few individual shots of our little model.
